Live Casino Glossary: The Words on a Malaysian Live Table, Defined

What do the terms on a live casino table mean?

A live lobby uses a working vocabulary that nobody explains at the table. The dealer calls no more bets, the scoreboard fills with red and blue dots, the rules panel mentions La Partage or 6 to 5, and the promotions page talks about turnover as if everyone knows what it measures. This page defines those words once, in the standard casino sense, and points each one at the guide on this site that goes into the detail.

Where a definition carries a figure, it is the same figure used everywhere else here: Banker at 1.06%, single-zero roulette at 2.70%, double-zero at 5.26%, blackjack basic strategy near 0.5%. Those are standard published values for the games, not measurements of any particular table. Anything that depends on a specific paytable, such as a side bet, is described as a range and you are sent to the rules panel.

Baccarat terms

Banker, Player and Tie

The three main bets in baccarat. Banker backs the hand dealt to the banker position, Player backs the other hand, and Tie backs both finishing on the same total. Banker wins slightly more often than Player, which is why it carries a commission. See the baccarat guide.

Commission

The 5% deducted from winning Banker bets in standard baccarat. It corrects for Banker's higher win rate and is what leaves the bet at a 1.06% house edge rather than a player advantage. See baccarat odds.

No-commission baccarat

A variant that pays winning Banker bets at full even money but pays only half, or a fixed reduced amount, when Banker wins with a total of six. The house edge moves to a different place rather than disappearing. See the commission-free section of baccarat odds.

Natural

A two-card total of eight or nine for either hand. A natural ends the round at once with no third card drawn, and a natural nine beats a natural eight. See baccarat rules.

Third-card rule

The fixed drawing table that decides whether Player or Banker receives a third card. Player draws on zero to five and stands on six or seven; Banker's draw depends on its own total and on the Player's third card. Neither the dealer nor the player chooses. See the full third-card table.

Roadmap

The scoreboard beside a live baccarat table, including the bead plate and big road, that records past results as coloured markers. It is a history of the shoe and has no predictive value. See baccarat strategy.

Roulette terms

European vs American roulette

European roulette uses a 37-pocket wheel with a single zero and costs 2.70%. American roulette adds a double-zero pocket for 38, keeps every payout identical and costs 5.26%. See the European vs American comparison.

Inside and outside bets

Inside bets sit on the number grid: straight up, split, street, corner and six-line, paying from 35 to 1 down to 5 to 1. Outside bets cover groups such as red or black, odd or even, dozens and columns, paying 2 to 1 or even money. See roulette rules.

La Partage and En Prison

French rules that apply when zero lands against an even-money bet. La Partage returns half the stake; En Prison holds the stake for the next spin. Either cuts the house edge on those bets to 1.35%. See the roulette rulebook.

Five-number bet

The American-wheel bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3, paying 6 to 1. Its house edge is 7.89%, the worst price on any roulette layout. See why the American wheel costs more.

Blackjack terms

Basic strategy

The mathematically correct decision for every player hand against every dealer upcard, worked out from expected value. Followed exactly on liberal rules it brings the house edge to about 0.5%; it never makes the game profitable. See the full basic strategy chart.

Insurance

A side wager offered when the dealer shows an ace, paying 2 to 1 if the dealer holds a natural. It runs about 7% against the player, and basic strategy declines it every time. See the insurance section of basic strategy.

Surrender

Giving up a hand after the first two cards in exchange for half the stake back. Where a table offers it, surrender is correct for a small set of hands, such as hard 16 against a dealer ten. See how to play blackjack.

Blackjack natural

A two-card 21 made of an ace and a ten-value card. It pays 3 to 2 at a standard table; a 6 to 5 payout adds roughly 1.4% to the house edge and is the first line to check on the rules panel. See blackjack rules.

Dice and card game terms

Big and Small

The even-money bets in sic bo. Small wins on a three-dice total of 4 to 10 and Big on 11 to 17; both lose to any triple. Each carries a 2.78% house edge, the cheapest squares on the layout. See the sic bo guide.

Triple

All three sic bo dice showing the same number. A specific triple pays 180 to 1 at a house edge near 16%; any-triple bets pay less and the paytable varies by table. See sic bo payouts.

Dragon Tiger tie

In Dragon Tiger, a tie means both cards share the same rank. The Dragon and Tiger bets lose half their stake on a tie, which is where their 3.73% house edge comes from, and the Tie bet itself pays 8 to 1 at a house edge around 32.8%. See the Dragon Tiger guide.

Joker card

The single card turned face up at the start of an Andar Bahar round. Cards are then dealt alternately to the Andar and Bahar sides until one matches its rank, and that side wins. See the Andar Bahar guide.

Going to war

The option on a tied hand in Casino War to double the stake and take one more card rather than surrender half. Going to war costs about 2.9% with six decks; surrendering costs about 3.7%. See the Casino War guide.

House-banked poker

Poker variants such as Casino Holdem, Three Card Poker and Caribbean Stud in which you play against the dealer under a fixed paytable, never against other players. The ante and play structure sets the price. See live casino poker.

Studio and stream terms

Dealer studio

The broadcast facility where a live table is physically dealt and filmed. Studios such as Evolution, SA Gaming and WM Casino set presentation, pace, dealer language and interface; the odds belong to the game rules. See the studio comparison.

Betting window

The countdown during which a live table accepts bets. It closes at the call of no more bets, before the cards are dealt or the ball drops, and a bet that reaches the server after that is returned to your balance. See how live casino works.

Game control unit

The small device attached to each live table that binds the physical result, read by card recognition or wheel sensors, to a round identifier that every accepted bet settles against. See the studio-to-screen chain.

Stream delay

The lag between the studio event and the picture on your screen, also called latency. Rounds settle on the studio server, so a confirmed bet survives a frozen stream, and your round history is the authoritative record. See live casino problems.

Game show and multiplier

Live formats built around a wheel or a presenter, often adding random multipliers to payouts. The multiplier is funded from a lower base payout, so the headline number does not make the bet cheaper. See the Evolution studio page.

Maths and account terms

House edge

The percentage of every amount staked that the casino keeps on average over a very large number of bets. It is charged on turnover, not on deposits or sessions. Baccarat Banker is 1.06%; single-zero roulette is 2.70%. See every live table game ranked by house edge.

RTP

Return to player: the share of turnover paid back on average, and the mirror image of the house edge. A 2.70% edge is a 97.30% RTP. Table games are usually quoted as an edge and machine games as RTP. See house edge versus RTP.

Side bet

An optional extra wager on a detail of the round, such as a pair on the first two cards or a specific triple. Side bets pay far more than the main bet and cost several times as much per ringgit staked. See the side bets guide.

Table limits

Turnover
