How does Andar Bahar work at a live table?

The dealer turns a single card face up in the middle of the table. In most live versions it is called the joker or the game card, and it is the only card that matters. Every other card in the round exists to be compared against its rank.

Two betting areas sit either side of it: Andar, meaning inside, and Bahar, meaning outside. Once the joker is showing, the dealer places cards alternately onto the two sides until a card appears whose rank matches the joker. That side wins. Suits are ignored, totals are irrelevant, and the round ends the moment the match lands.

The game came out of southern India, where it is also known as katti or mangatha, and it has spread through Asian facing live lobbies over the last few years because it films well and needs no explanation. A round can end on the first card or run past forty, which is a large part of the appeal.

The side dealt first wins slightly more often, so it pays slightly less

Which side receives the first card is fixed by the table rule, usually tied to the colour or rank of the joker. Whichever side goes first has an advantage, because it sees one extra card whenever the round ends on an odd numbered deal.

The size of that advantage is small and precise. After the joker is removed, 51 cards remain and three of them match its rank. Work through where the first match falls and the side dealt first takes about 51.5% of rounds, leaving 48.5% to the other. That is a much tighter split than most casino games manage.

A casino cannot price two near equal outcomes at even money and take anything, so the payout is trimmed on the favoured side. On the common live layout the first side pays 0.9 to 1 while the second pays a full 1 to 1. That trim is the whole house edge: it works out at a little over 2% on the first side and around 3% on the second.

Payout rules do differ between studios. Some pay both sides the same and adjust elsewhere, so read the table rules rather than assuming this structure. Where it applies, backing the first dealt side is the cheaper of the two.

The side bets are a different price altogether

Most live tables carry extras alongside the two main bets. The common ones ask how many cards will be dealt before the match lands, grouped into bands that pay from around 2.5 to 1 for a short round up to very large multiples for a long one. Others pay on the rank or suit of the joker itself.

Once your chip is down there is no decision left. You cannot influence which side the match falls on, no sequence of past rounds tells you anything about the next one, and no staking pattern changes what the game costs per ringgit staked.
